One of the highlights at the Coperion and Coperion K-Tron stand (K 19 in hall 14) will be two re-designed ZSK Mc18 extruders with a 45- and 70-mm screw diameter and specific torque of 18 Nm/cm3. Maintenance on the ZS-B and ZS-EG twin-screw extruders has been simplified, thanks to a design that enables quick screw removal for cleaning or change overs, said the company, which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. The extruders are equipped with single-part heat insulation covers that can be detached without removing the cartridge heaters.

The ZSK 70 Mc18 will be on display with a K3-ML-D5-V200 type vibratory feeder and ZS-B easy with a K-ML-SFS-BSP-100 bulk solids pump feeder. The smaller ZSK 45 Mc18 will be equipped with a gravimetric K2-ML-D5-T35 twin-screw feeder and ZS-B easy with a K-ML-SFS-KT20 twin-screw feeder for high accuracy at low feed rates

  • Sikora Centerwave 6000

Measurement and control technology specialist Sikora (Bremen, Germany) will introduce its Centerwave 6000/1600 measuring system at K 2019. The system was developed to ensure quality control of plastic tubes and pipes during extrusion. It offers precise measurement of tubing in diameters ranging from 630 to 1,600 mm. The system will be on display at stand H 21 in hall 10.

Based on innovative millimeter wave technology, the Centerwave 6000/1600 continuously and completely measures wall thickness, diameter, ovality, inner profile and sagging across the entire circumference of the pipe. The system does not require coupling media or calibration and performs precise measurements regardless of the operating temperature or material being extruded. Manual input of production line modifications is not required—the operator benefits from an inline integrated system that delivers reliable and reproducible measurement values directly after startup, said the company

  • Welex Evolution sheet extrusion system

Shown at the Graham Engineering Corp. (York, PA) stand, the Evolution sheet extrusion system from Welex is a complete production line for use in sheeting, winding and in-line thermoforming applications. It is equipped with XSL Navigator control. While the equipment on display at K 2019 is designed for thin-gauge polypropylene, the Evolution system can be customized for widths from 36 to 90 in. (90 to 230 cm), gauges from 0.008 to 0.125 in. (0.2 to 3.2 mm) and throughputs up to 10,000 lb./hr. (4,535 kg/hr.).

Monolayer or co-extrusion systems are available with up to nine extruders. In addition to a customized roll stand, the Evolution can also be equipped with screen changers, melt pumps, mixers, feedblocks and dies.

Three levels of functionality are available: XC100 for stand-alone extruders, XC200 for one or more extruders in simultaneous operation and XC300 for integrated production lines with the extruder and components such as a puller, water bath or winder.

The Evolution system will be on display at stand A 71 in hall 16.

  • Sika TRKC planetary saws

TRKC planetary saws were designed by Sika (Alfonsine, Italy) specifically for extrusion-line cutting without removing material from HDPE and PP-R pipes, regardless of thickness. The machines are equipped with a first cutting arm with a circular idle blade and a second arm, or clamp, to support the pipe during the cutting process.

The idle blade reduces friction and overheating of the material compared with a conventional knife or fixed tool. The counter-rollers, which are in constant contact with the surface of the pipe, prevent bending and improve precision, according to the company.

Sika noted in its press release that complex tubing materials, such as PVDF, PP-R and fiberglass, are increasingly used in the medical and telecommunications sectors. Conventional cutting systems are inadequate for these applications and often require new technological approaches, such as proportional valves that may be difficult to manage, control and maintain. “There is a need to create new-generation saws that can be versatile and high performance, as well as simple and more reliable in terms of process repeatability and control,” said the company.

Sika’s new TRKC 160E cuts pipe and tubing in diameters up to 160 mm without generating chips or dust. Everything is managed automatically by defining a few essential parameters on the operating panel, such as the type of extruded material and the diameter and thickness of the pipe. Each movement is electric, therefore silent, precise and repeatable.

In the event of power disruption, Sica has created a patent pending electro-elastic hybrid system that allows cutting tools to be secured, disengaging them from any pipe in transit

Gillard (Tewkesbury, UK) has announced that it will be exhibiting a new extrusion servo rotary cutter on stand C 77 in hall 16 at K 2019. The new Servo-Torq Plus extrusion cutter, which is designed for plastics and rubbers as well as nonpolymer materials, combines Lenze brushless AC servo motors with a digital multi-axis control system to activate the rotating knife blade. According to Gillard, very high cut rates are possible, with precise cut-length accuracy.

The new Siemens widescreen touch panels allow easy operator control of the machine. The new Servo-Torq cutters are available with maximum diameter cutting capacities up to 150 mm.
Integral twin-belt Accra-Feed caterpillar in-feeder/puller machines are provided to match every cutter model. The direct-drive AC motors and planetary gearboxes provide improved speed control at high extrusion speeds, said Gillard.

  • American Kuhne medical extruder

Graham Engineering Corp. (York, PA) will exhibit several extrusion systems at stand A 71 in hall 16, but the real star of the show will be its Navigator control system, said the company. Originally developed for Graham Engineering’s extrusion blow molding systems and then adapted for sheet extrusion lines manufactured by Welex, the Navigator controls are now available for American Kuhne extrusion systems that process medical tubing (pictured), profiles, wire and cable. American Kuhne medical extrusion systems, including the Ultra MD, compact modular extruders and a tri-layer tubing line with the XC300 Navigator control and integrated TwinCAT Scope View high-speed data- acquisition system, will be featured at the stand.

Davis-Standard (Pawcatuck, CT) will feature extrusion equipment for medical and automotive applications as well as a new die for extrusion coating at stand A 43 in hall 16. Highlights include silicone technology for producing medical-grade silicone tubes, wound drains and catheters as well as elastomer capabilities for manufacturing hydraulic and automotive hoses and automotive seals.

The Model 3000A crosshead (pictured) reduces scrap and allows faster start-up times. The crosshead offers preferred features such as a tapered mandrel and highly engineered flow paths to ensure consistent flow through all speed ranges, as well as a thrust bearing on pin adjustment to adjust wall thickness without interruption.
